Backbone game spoilers9/18/2023 ![]() When clarissa came to the place where howard was staying and questioned him about why he was investigating her, i was given the choice between 3 different cups to give her - the ape of the year cup, renee's mug, or a simple red cup. this contains a spoiler for something that happens an hour or two into the game, so don't read on if you don't want to be spoiled! There is ample opportunity to break with the bleaker aspects of the Noir genre.I couldn't find a place in the discord to post a bug report so i figured i'd post it here. The Great Apes rule the enclave of Vancouver, and the wastes only offer a hardscrabble existence on the fringes. Unless this trope is subverted, it does not bode well for the escapees. There is a very strong Noir feel running through this, and a common theme of Noir seems to be the rich and powerful playing by their own rules, crushing those in their way. The speculation that the wall is simply a tool of control by the apes seems wrong. When Howard escapes beyond the wall, the outside is a wasteland. There is a lot of material and backstory, but by focusing on Howard's story, there are a lot of loose ends. I really think they are almost setting up a sequel with Renee as the main protagonist. I loved the backstory about Rose and the other girls, and Clarissa Bloodworth's justification. I’m going to play again eventually to see if I can get more answers (and sweet cheevos) but based on the one solid ending I don’t think I’m going to get anything. But what happened to the city? What happened to the girls? Rose, Leslie, Gina, Mai? Where is Gina’s family? It’s just a lot of questions that are posed and never resolved. It’s some kind of destroyed society of barren wastes. You spend all that time trying to look for the missing girls and promise so many people that you’re going to help them figure out what happened to their family, only to never actually find them if they’re okay, and never figure out what the hell happened beyond the wall. Why is there never anything else of this? You realize from Rose’s files that the girls were accomplices to Clarissa Bloodworth, and they escaped over the Wall but then nothing else is mentioned. But when you go through all of Rose’s files, there’s one that says “I love you, Leslie”. So based off this, maybe what I’m asking about is totally undeveloped and never becomes anything because of where the story ends. This game was really lovely, and I would have loved alternative endings but I understand if that wasn’t in the cards due to funding and resources or something similar. No attacks, prejudice and discrimination.Plot themes: corruption, discrimination, prejudice, society and personality.Inspiration: Vancouver, film noir, neo-noir, retrofuturism, dystopian fiction.Gameplay: cinematic detective adventure with stealth and action elements. ![]() French, German, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish TBA ![]()
